Things to do in Santorini Volcano

4.4/5 (217)

Lunar landscapes, black volcanic sands and red cliffs make Santorini a natural gem that draws visitors to the charming island of Santorini year after year. Multiple eruptions over the years have transformed Santorini into a five-island archipelago; consisting of Santorini, Therasia and Aspronisi and the Kameni islands at the centre made of entirely black lava. This volcanic zone is the most dynamic in the South Aegean and visitors have the chance to visit the active volcanoes on the islands of Therasia and Nea Kameni – known to locals as the Volcano.

The eruption was also responsible for one of the greatest calderas in the world – the edge of a volcanic crater – now lined by traditional blue-roofed houses that mesmerise all who visit. From the caldera, stunning views across the turquoise waters and neighbouring islands can be seen and you’ll get a glimpse of the island’s geographical history. Visit the active volcanoes of Therasia and Nea Kameni and walk over its active craters, solidified lava fields and steamy fumes. Its harsh moon-like landscapes will have you feeling out of this world.

At Palea Kamei, visitors can enjoy the mineral-rich hot springs and mud baths, known for their therapeutic and healing effects. Gaze out at the wild beauty of the Santorini Caldera in the distance and feel the power of nature around you.

“Bit too crowded and felt you couldn't walk around the boat. Lunch was good. Guide was good Captain was excellent”

“- not enough information about what the trip actually included - hadn't realised about the stop-offs and where - the food was extremely poor and almost inedible - the wine was disgusting - had an obscured view of the sunset as the captain didn't move the boat around so only one side of the boat had a proper view - the trip didn't need to be as long as that. It could be shorter and cheaper to just see the sunset”

“The port was like a cattle market. The seatbelt on the bud didn't work. Lots of pick ups on way. The place where we stopped for 2 hours was very grotty. Other than sitting in a restaurant there was nothing else to do. The beach wasn't a beach just dirty rocks”

“The actual boat trip and sunset was very good but too many boats scheduled at once to stop to swim in volcanic spring. Food at restaurant was very poor”
