Things to do in Helsinki Cathedral
Feel the peace as Helsinki Cathedral towers over you, with its impressive white temple facade and green-topped domes with golden stars and spires. This major city landmark will not leave you disappointed.
Helsinki Cathedral is a Cathedral of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and was designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel. The work was continued after his death by Ernst Bernhard Lohrmannand and it took almost two decades to build.
This amazing Neoclassical architecture offers the central dome and bell tower, four church towers as well as the statues of the twelve Apostles that look over Helsinki from above! Inside is no less impressive, with its airy spaces that will leave you feeling calm and spiritual.
Look out for the altarpiece with statues of angels and its organs. You can even take the elevator down to the Crypt where art exhibitions are sometimes held and where you can find a cafe. There is also a souvenir shop in case you want to take something home with you.
The church is in regular use for services of worship and special events too. Why not go along and listen to a church concert or organ recital, where the acoustics will give you goosebumps! You can also go to a prayer time or service and see where the locals pray.
