What to expect

Travelling by rickshaw and rail, discover Goa's past as a Portuguese colony. With religious gems and relics aplenty, you'll call in at the city of Margao, hit a local market and finish up with a traditional lunch surrounded by colonial charm. Supriya, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘This tour gets you right into the heart of Goan life. You'll be shopping at the busy market where you'll see the great variety of produce grown in the region, then you'll travel by train and rickshaw, just as the locals do.'

The morning kicks off in Margao – Goa's bustling commercial capital. With free time to explore the market here, you can wander its rows of colourful stalls and practice your bargaining skills. The market dates back to the pre-colonial era when it was a prominent trade centre for spices and other commodities. Today, you can find all sorts of fresh foods, clothing and trinkets, plus a flea market section. Then, hopping in a rickshaw, you'll be whisked to the station to catch the train to your next stop.

Chugging to a halt in Sanvordem, you'll carry on by bus to Quepem to visit the impressive Palacio Deao. Boasting a superb blend of Hindu and Portuguese architecture, this carefully restored 200-year-old manor boasts impressive views of the Kushavati River. You'll take a guided tour to explore its airy, colonial interiors and exquisite gardens before lunch, where you'll get to try some of the best-loved Goan specialities.

The whole trip was very good. We weren't rushed, had plenty of time at each place we visited. Driver excellent at driving us safely through the manic roads. Our guide , Micheal was brilliant and explained everything to us plus answered all our questions. The food at Rubens was superb, all dishes explained, plenty to eat. He did a great tour if the house. One of the better trips we have been on over the last couple of years.cwoukd recommend

Tour guide Michael really knew his stuff, he was very engaging & kept everyone informed about loads of things along the journey. The only problem was the price of the drinks at lunch double the amount most other places charges

The coach was very uncomfortable. The church visit in Margoe was pointless as you can’t go inside. The Palacio house where we had lunch was excellent. Food was superb and house and garden was lovely to walk round. Train journey was an interesting experience. The whole day was too expensive and not vale for money.

Goan jungle village tour with spice farm and elephant experience

Beneath a thick canopy of green, your local guide will reveal the secrets of the Goan jungle on this full-day tour. As they lead you into the rainforest, the sights and sounds of the jungle will come alive as you hear stories of survival and sustainable living. A big part of surviving in the jungle is understanding the plants, so there's a spice and herb farm tour to learn more about their medicinal benefits, as well as what's good to eat and what you should avoid. Then, it's time to put your foraging lesson to the test as you gather wild ingredients for a cooking demonstration that will be part of your lunch later on. While the spices are simmering, you'll head to the eco-village to learn more about how the locals live in harmony with the jungle. They'll welcome you into their houses and show you the sustainable efforts they're making, like turning kitchen waste into cooking gas. After enjoying the fruits of your labour at lunch, it's elephant time. You'll help prepare food for the elephants and then learn from their carers about how they gently communicate and connect with these majestic creatures before you watch them enjoy their mud baths in the river. Then, for the last hour of the tour it's your turn to swim and splash or simply float in a natural pool, taking in your exotic yet peaceful surroundings.
