What to expect

This three-day tour switches between one of India's most historic cityscapes to her wildest natural surroundings. You'll explore a wealth of UNESCO-listed treasures, pristine palaces and magnificent monuments in the ancient kingdom of Mysore and visit Bandipur National Park – the country's premier Bengal tiger and elephant sanctuary.

Get an early start to fly from Goa to Bangalore, the ‘Garden City' of India. En route to Mysore you'll stop at Srirangapatna, an island town in the middle of the Kaveri River, where an impressive 9th-century temple takes centre-stage. From there it's a short drive to the hotel in Mysore, the ancient capital of the Wodiyar dynasty, and home for the next two nights. After lunch we kick off the afternoon's sightseeing with a trip to Chamundi Hill Temple. Then it's on to the city's star turn, the Mysore Palace. Spend time here admiring its colourful domes and archways, and wandering through intricately carved doorways into lavishly decorated rooms, once the residence of the mighty maharajas. Round off day one with a stop at the colourful Devaraja flower and fruit market and an evening visit to Brindavan Gardens.

On day two, we swap history for nature in Bandipur National Park. This is one of India's premier wildlife sanctuaries and the largest protected area in southern India. After a scenic drive to the park, you'll take a thrilling safari ride to spot impressive Indian elephants, beautiful Bengal tigers and more. After a wild day out, you'll head back to Mysore to hit the hay. On your last day, the highlight is a trip to Somanathapura and the ancient Keshava Temple, dating back to 1268. As you head northbound towards the airport there's a chance to visit Cubbon Park and Vidhan Soudha if time allows, before jetting back to Goa in the evening.

As they lead you into the rainforest, the sights and sounds of the jungle will come alive as you hear stories of survival and sustainable living. A big part of surviving in the jungle is understanding the plants, so there's a spice and herb farm tour to learn more about their medicinal benefits, as well as what's good to eat and what you should avoid. Then, it's time to put your foraging lesson to the test as you gather wild ingredients for a cooking demonstration that will be part of your lunch later on. While the spices are simmering, you'll head to the eco-village to learn more about how the locals live in harmony with the jungle. They'll welcome you into their houses and show you the sustainable efforts they're making, like turning kitchen waste into cooking gas. After enjoying the fruits of your labour at lunch, it's elephant time. You'll help prepare food for the elephants and then learn from their carers about how they gently communicate and connect with these majestic creatures before you watch them enjoy their mud baths in the river. Taj Mahal with Agra Fort three-day private tour from Goa

If you haven't seen the Taj Mahal, you haven't really seen India. And although it's on the opposite side of the country to Goa, it's worth the trip. This private three-day tour takes in the spectacular domed mausoleum and a few other gems along the way. Ajay, one of our expert local guides, says, "The Taj Mahal is exquisite, inlaid with precious stones to add colour and texture to the typically Mughal decoration of geometric patterns as well as fruits, flowers, and vines."We'll kick start the journey by catching a plane to Delhi and then we'll head straight to Agra by bus. Then, once you've recharged your batteries in a hotel, you'll be up bright and early for a dawn trip to the Taj. "The early morning light filtered through the mist from the river gives the Taj Mahal a soft glow. My tip is to photograph the details on the mausoleum's exterior. Many people are so focused on getting a symmetrical photo from a distance that they forget that the building itself has some beautiful detailing."This tomb was built for a 17th Century emperor's favourite wife, and you'll get a guided tour of the ivory-white masterpiece. Exploring the iconic site and its gardens, you'll spend the rest of the day ticking off more of the region's impressive architecture. Calling by the colossal Agra Fort you'll also visit Fatehpur Sikri – an ancient city crammed with ornate palaces and mosques. And after another night at your hotel, you'll take the road back to Delhi for your return flight to Goa.
