What to expect

Long before the Greeks or Romans ever picked up a brick, there were magnificent temples in India. Travelling the authentic Indian way, you'll journey by train to Hampi to discover one of her most prized historical sites – the ancient city of Vijayanagar. Expect plenty of pretty villages, greenery and history on this three-day tour.

The adventure begins with a train ride – a true local experience. Chugging alongside the Tungabhadra River, you can admire great views of the rocky terrain before pulling to a stop in Hampi. From there, you'll make your way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vijayanagar.

Once a wealthy Hindu kingdom, it's crammed with crumbling palaces and monuments that you'll have plenty of free time to explore. Standout gems include the Vitthala Temple's musical stone pillars and the temple of Virupaksha. Dedicated to the Hindu goddess Vishnu, it boasts a 50m tall tower still used for worship today. And with a two-night hotel stay included, you can really make the most of your time here.

You need to warn clients that they will lose 2 days of their vacation, which they will spend on the road! I lost my dinner, which was paid for in my independent hotel because Hampi was omitted, I had to spend extra money! Due to the train delay, we had to hire another transport to get back to GOA, which again required additional costs! Talking to others from our group, I found out that your price is higher than online from other companies! But, Hampi itself was cool, of course, if you are nearby

We were well looked after and Hampi was fabulous and fascinating. Not impressed with the hotel in Hospete (different to the one advertised) and not enough free time in Hampi itself. We had a very long delay on the train journey home so I would only recommend this trip if you have 3 weeks plus in Goa, and also you need to be resilient for the India Railway experience. We still loved our guides and Hampi.

The middle day at Hampi was outstanding, and made even better by both the 3 day guide and the local Hampi guide. The rail journey of 8 hours each way on a local Indian train and the mobility issues around Hampi need to be better emphasised pre-sale to highlight the obvious issues. The TUI rep should do this trip at least annually if not already the case to provide current and up to date info. Consider selling the train journey (experience)as part of the trip rather than the method to get there!

Amazing experience. Hampi was like nothing we’d ever seen before and has to be visited to be appreciated. Our guides were excellent. The train journey was an experience, be prepared for a long hot journey (8hrs each way), but one you’ll never forget - you will be in amongst it and not in some cushy first class carriage. Also be prepared for it to be tiring as well, with v early starts. More info in advance of the itinerary would be helpful, but this was well worth it.
