Things to do in Christiansborg Palace
Christiansborg Palace, also known as the Danish Parliament, is a palace and government building located on the islet of Slotsholmen (Castle Island) in central Copenhagen and holds an 800-year history as Denmark’s center of power.
Once home to the Danish Royal family, the palace is now the seat of the Danish Parliament, the Danish Prime Minister’s Office and also the Supreme Court of Denmark. The palace is the only building in the world which contains all three of a country’s branches of government and therefore home to three supreme powers: the executive power, the legislative power and the judicial power. Today, the Danish Royal family still uses the palace for official duties, including gala dinners, banquets and public events.
The present palace was built between 1907 and 1928 and is the last in a succession of castles and palaces constructed on the same site since the creation of the first castle in 1167. The palace still features remnants from its previous structures and therefore includes three different types of architectural design: neo-baroque, neo-classical and baroque style.
Visitors can explore the spectacular Royal Reception Rooms, The Royal Stables, The Royal Kitchen, Christiansborg Palace Chapel and the 11th-century ruins under the palace. Admire the beautiful antiques, impressive art and the Queen’s tapestries as you discover the impressive history of the building. The palace’s tower opened to the public in 2014, is considered one of the best viewpoints in the city and offers sweeping views over the surrounding landscape and buildings.
The islet of Slotsholmen is easily accessible by public transport and is connected to the city via several short bridges. The palace has a small café and a gift shop where you can pick up a unique souvenir for yourself or a loved one.
