Livorno, de Toscaanse toegangspoort tot de Middellandse Zee, wordt doorkruist door kanalen en ligt aan de kust. Livorno, in de 16e eeuw ontworpen als ideale stad, wordt gekenmerkt door wijken met Medici-kanalen die nog steeds bevaarbaar zijn, en door de haven, torens en forten die naar het stadscentrum leiden.
